What to expect for the Capitals this weekend
The Washington Capitals are playing in their first-ever NHL game on Saturday night.
It’s a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which will have its own two-game road trip after playing the Minnesota Wild on Friday night.
Washington’s trip to Pittsburgh is a big one.
They’ll face the Penguins three times in the season, with a fifth home game against Pittsburgh coming in mid-November.
The Capitals play the Penguins twice in four months, so this is a great opportunity for them to get a feel for Pittsburgh, where they played two games in four weeks last season.
The Penguins are playing their home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday, but they’re not going to get to Pittsburgh until Nov. 27.
Pittsburgh is also coming off a five-game trip to Chicago and the Florida Panthers on Sunday.
The Flyers are coming off back-to-back losses to the Carolina Hurricanes and Detroit Red Wings, so they’re going to have to deal with a lot of pressure.
The Panthers are coming in after their third-straight loss, which came on Tuesday night against the Winnipeg Jets.
The Blackhawks beat the Jets 3-1 on Tuesday and then beat the Panthers 3-2 on Saturday.
Chicago is coming off an impressive six-game winning streak and has played better than it’s expected to in recent weeks.
But they’ve also struggled with injuries and goaltending, so that could affect how the Capitals play.
Chicago’s two losses have come in the second period and overtime, and the Blackhawks are 3-0-0 when leading after one period.
This is an important game for the Panthers, who were just 3-5-1 before this season.
Pittsburgh’s home opener will be a home game for Washington, so it’s a tough road trip ahead of them.
The Caps will face the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks in the first two games of the road trip, but the last time Washington played in Anaheim was the last game of the regular season on Feb. 27, so we’ll see how that goes.
Washington has won three straight at home against the Kings, and they have a good shot at winning their first road game.
The Ducks are coming into this game coming off their fourth consecutive win.
They beat the Canucks 3-3 on Friday.
They will be playing the Capitals again on Sunday in a game that will be televised on Fox Sports Northwest.
The Kings will play the Flyers again on Saturday, and then they’ll play the Wild.
Washington won their first game against Philadelphia on Monday, but then the Flyers beat them 3-4 on Wednesday.
That game was the first of a back-and-forth three-game series that included the game that gave Washington its first loss of the season.
That loss came in the third period, and that game was played in the Coliseum, so the game was going to be an easy game for both teams.
If the Capitals win this game, it would be the second straight time they’ve beaten Philadelphia, the only other time being a 4-3 win on April 19, 2015.
